“1X1 Theater of emotions” was born inspired by the existential condition experienced through social distancing; an interior excursus, the result of the exploration of a baggage of memories and emotions.
This project began during the 2020 lockdown in Como where I had just started a work experience at Taroni textile. Despite the emergency situation, thanks to the willingness of the company that provided me with the material necessary for my experiments, I was able to continue working directly from my Como accommodation.
"1X1 Theater of Emotions" was born inspired by the existential condition experienced through social distancing; 1 meter was the minimum distance allowed in the interrelationship between individuals. The reflections that the moment required, and these limits on distances led me to think of dividing the double satin I had into squares of one meter which I then used to create this capsule collection of 5 dresses. This work is a study on the type of fabric, and on how it is possible to manipulate the same shape and quantity of fabric in different ways using various techniques such as moulage, dyeing and embroidery, to transform the silk squares according to the sensations suggested by the moment. These forms of dress express a succession of moods crossed during the months of lockdown when I was away from everything that was usual and familiar in my life. They are the result of the exploration of a baggage of memories and emotions, an inner excursus in which the various experiences, sensations and images change and evolve from childhood to adolescence, up to the days of adulthood. I was born on Lake Pielinen in Finland and the "family" environment that I found in Como aroused many emotions that were no longer able to emerge in Roman life. Probably because the context of the city from an architectural and landscape chromatic point of view, or the density of superimpositions that coexist in it, was in stark contrast to that dimension of being in which my creativity was initially nourished. All of this coincides strongly with a personal metamorphosis, of cleanliness and synthesis, symbolically like the passage of an era that ends and the beginning of a new one, a long journey and a return to “home", in the heart of the soul.
“Transform the existing into the shape of the future” is my leitmotif and philosophy for “restarting” living and working in an appropriate, fair and ethical way, in an age that it no longer allows you to go further in a way that is disrespectful towards man and the environment. The decisive value to be taken into account in today's world is sustainability, while vicious circles still exist or are created from scratch in which to produce and certify many materials, which in reality are less sustainable than they proclaim. "Less is more", we must re-educate ourselves to live with less and, when possible, obtain what is necessary without producing new. Time is the human value, the past is what hands down the teaching that must be preserved, and the future is the goal to which we must bring this knowledge. The real fashion revolution that I imagine is the possibility of human beings to coexist in union with the environment in which they live.
Como is “the source” of silk in Italy, a city that put me in relation to the textile tradition, the mini-collection made with the precious material (coming from the company warehouse and produced for previous collections) is also a reflection on how one is conditioned by a place, on the influence that this exerts on the individual, on the resources it makes available, not only at the level of raw materials and goods to be used or consumed but also at the socio-political level, cultural models and traditions ( human and environmental tissue).
Upon returning to Rome, working in the Off1c1na art studio, I gave shape to the notes I had "drawn" during my stay in Como. To create the internal structure, I started from the same concept of reusing leftover materials, such as for example polyester bands (used for car seat belts) that I found at a car demolition in the neighborhood, while previously for sewing, in the impossibility of being able to buy material, I had used the filaments of the same fabric by pulling them out of the silk. The result is the intersection of precious and poor materials, in some ways both waste.
Inside this work there is all the testimony of my creative journey like pages of a travel diary of that year.
